Liposuction is a surgical procedure that entails the removal of excess fats deposits located between the skin and the muscle tissues. Also known as lipoplasty or body contouring, it is a highly effective procedure that ensures permanent removal of stubborn fats cells in the body. Essentially, it is carried out in specific areas of the body especially in areas where fats deposits tend to collect and accumulate usually in the abdominal area, buttocks, hips, chin, thighs, and neck.

Liposuction is usually carried out by a plastic surgeon; a plastic surgeon is a specialist in aesthetic and reconstructive surgery.

The Liposuction Michigan Procedure

The procedure is performed in a hospital, a surgeon’s office, or an outpatient surgery; it is a surgical approach that involves several major steps.

  • Before the onset of the surgical procedure, the surgeon administers anesthesia to the patient; the anesthesia is taken by mouth or through an injection. The type of the anesthesia, whether a local or general anesthesia depends primarily on the depth and amount of the fat tissues to be suctioned.
  • Notably, a general anesthesia is used in a combination of intravenous surgery medications that put the patient in a deep sleep. It is used when a large amount of fats cells are to be suctioned. On the hand, a local anesthesia and a sedative are used to numb a small area. In essence, the anesthesia is used to keep the patient relaxed and comfortable during the procedure.
  • During the surgical procedure, a few small incisions are made in the skin tissues to be suctioned. A surgical solution containing a large volume of saline solution is then injected using a thin glass tube. The solution contains various solutions including adrenaline and epinephrine, which facilitate effective removal of the fat by preventing excessive blood loss, swelling and pain during and after the surgery.
  • Then, a thin cannula tube is inserted into the incisions; the cannula is used to break down and dissolves the fatty tissues; in essence, it dislodges and liquefies the fat deposits to enhance efficient removal.
  • A small surgical vacuum or syringe is then inserted into the skin, and the fat tissues are suctioned out gently using a high vacuum pressure. The vacuum pressure is also used to protect and minimize any cellular damage to the surrounding tissues.

With advancement in technology, a modified laser can be used to heat the superficial layer surrounding the tissues to be suctioned; this process stimulates the layer to secrete collagen and elastin, which restores the skin quality in the post-treatment period. Other conditions collected by liposuction may include lipomas, a medical condition associated with benign fatty tumors. This disorder hinders the metabolism of body fat, which may cause deposition of excess fats in the abdominal area.
