Rhinoplasty surgery steps

Step #1 – Anesthesia

The first thing that a surgeon will do is administer anesthesia to his or her patient. This is mainly done for the patient’s comfort during the surgical procedure. There are two options that the surgeon may use on the patient, the general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. The surgeon will recommend the option that suits you best.

Step #2 – The incision

Rhinoplasty can be done in two procedures, the open rhinoplasty and the closed rhinoplasty. In closed rhinoplasty, the incisions are usually hidden inside the nose. In open rhinoplasty, the incisions are done across the columella – This is a narrow strip of tissue which separates the nostrils.

Through the incisions, the skin covering the nasal bones and cartilages is raised gently allowing the surgeon to access and reshape the nose structure.

Step #3 – Reshaping the structure of the nose

Rhinoplasty can be either be used to increase or reduce the size of the nose. For an overly large nose, it can be reduced by removing cartilage and bone. For a small, uneven nose, the surgery requires the addition of graft cartilage. In many cases, the graft cartilage from the septum is used for this purpose. However, surgeons may occasionally use cartilage from the ears or a section of the rib cartilage.

Step #4 – Correction of a deviated septum

In case the septum is deviated causing breathing problems, it can be straightened and its projections reduced to improve breathing.

Step #5 – Closing the incision

Once the underlying structure of the nose has being rectified and sculpted to the patient’s desired shape, the nasal tissue and skin is redraped and the incisions are closed.

Step 6 – Healing

After Rhinoplasty, patients are advised to wear nasal splints for a few days. One should also expect swelling and bruises around the eyes, but it will improve from the third day after surgery.
